Turo has a set of requirements that you should meet as a guest. This ranges from age requirements to legal requirements, and insurance requirements. I’m going to break down these Turo requirements to rent one by one.

Booking a Car

In order to book a car on TuroOpens in a new tab., there are several requirements that you must fulfill. Let’s break them down into general and region-specific requirements.

General Turo requirements to rent

To book a car you must have a Turo account.

If you don’t have one;

  • You should sign upOpens in a new tab. now using your Facebook account, Google account, Apple ID, or your personal email address.
  • Enter a mobile phone number that you will use to receive text messages.
  • Ensure that you meet Turo’s age requirements(Explained below)

Requirements for all first-time customers are;

  • Driver’s license number and the date of expiry
  • Home address
  • Billing address
  • Payment method
  • A clear and recent photo of themselves for Turo profile.

In some situations, Turo may check your personal or business credit report, auto insurance score, and criminal background. During signing up, you give Turo permission to obtain this information.

Region-Specific Turo requirements to rent

In addition to the requirements stated above, you must meet the region-specific requirements in order to book.

United States

  • Social security number
  • Those under the age of 25, have to prove that they have been driving for at least 2 years.
  • Auto insurance Score that meets Turo’s benchmark
  • Valid permanent license or acceptable temporary license

Canada

  • Auto insurance Score that meets Turo’s benchmark
  • Valid permanent license or acceptable temporary license

UK

  • Valid permanent license
  • Have been a licensed driver for the last 2 years or more.
  • Those that are under 25 can only book cars identified as Group 1-16 by the Association of British Insurers.

Age Requirements by Country

United States Turo age Requirements to Rent

To book a trip on Turo with whoever the host is, you must meet the following requirements;

  • You must be 21 years or older to book a car with a total market value of over $20k.
  • You must be 30 years or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car or a specialty vehicle.
  • You must be 25 years or older to book a Deluxe Class car.

To book a trip with a peer-to-peer host, you must meet the following requirements;

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • If you are between the age of 18-20, you will have to pay a young driver fee of $50 per day.
  • If you are between the age of 21-25, you will have to pay a young driver fee of $30 per day.

For trips with a Commercial host;

  • The commercial host will set their own age restrictions for certain vehicles and young driver fees. Turo requires them to disclose this information in their listing.
  • A commercial host will provide their own insurance, therefore, you won’t choose a protection plan in Turo.
  • You must be 21 or older to book with commercial hosts.

Canada Turo age Requirements to Rent

To book a trip on Turo with whoever the host is, you must meet the following requirements;

  • You must be 21 years or older to book a car in Canada.
  • You must be 30 years or older to book a Super Deluxe Class car or a specialty vehicle.
  • You must be 25 years or older to book a Deluxe Class car.

For trips with a Commercial host;

  • The commercial host will set their own age restrictions for certain vehicles and young driver fees. Turo requires them to disclose this information in their listing.

UK Turo age Requirements to Rent

For trips with all hosts in the UK;

  • You must be at least 21 years old and no older than 74 years to book a car
  • You must be 25 years old or older to book a Deluxe Class car and 30 or older to book a super Deluxe Class Car.
  • Those that are under 25 can only book cars identified as Group 1-16 by the Association of British Insurers.

For trips with peer-to-peer hosts,

  • If you are under 25 you must pay a young driver fee of £25 per day.

For trips with a Commercial host;

  • The commercial host will set their own age restrictions for certain vehicles and young driver fees. Turo requires them to disclose this information in their listing.

Regions Outside US, UK , and Canada

You must be 21 years old or older to book a car

Turo Insurance Requirements

Turo offers three different levels of protection for guests:

  • Premium
  • Standard
  • Minimum

The higher the level the more the benefits.

You have an option of declining Turo’s protection plan if you have a personal auto policy, but before you do, make sure you confirm with your insurance if they cover peer-to-peer car rental services.Opens in a new tab.

If you’re age 18-21, you can’t decline a protection plan or choose Premier protection.

You must choose either the Minimum protection plan or the Standard protection plan.  

Also note that, if you decline, you will still get the minimum liability coverage required by the state from Turo.

If you are renting from a commercial host, the company will give you its protection plan. Turo is not involved in that. You have an option of declining their plan if you have a sufficient personal auto policy.
